SCHOOL
OF SOCIAL WORK ROSHNI NILAYA
The School
of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangalore
has been in the forefront of Social Work Education in the
state of Karnataka for the last five decades. It is managed by the Institute of Social Service, Mangalore,
an establishment with diverse services managed by the Society of the Daughters
of the Heart of Mary, an International Catholic Religious Congregation of Women
founded in France in 1790. The mission of the Congregation is to serve the
marginalized and discriminated groups in
society with a focus on women.
School of
Social Work is a minority institution eligible for the rights envisaged by
article 30 (1) of the Constitution of India. Its Vision is “ Towards becoming
an institution of social transformation, striving for excellence in education for social
justice " and its Mission is "
To become a centre of excellence in action oriented education cum research, and
participatory extension services ".
The Institute
has adopted as its motto, the words of Tagore “Love is Made Fruitful in Service” .Serving God by Serving human
persons is the principle that guides its actions.
Master of
Social Work (M.S.W).
M.S.W (Master
of social work ) which was started in 1967 as the first Private School of
Social Work post graduate degree in social work in Karnataka, is now a well
established academic programme of the college. It includes theoretical courses,
skill training Laboratories, concurrent social work practicum, action research
as well as co-curricular and extra curricular activities. All the learners are
required to complete the foundation
courses, as well as core courses offered during the first year and the
electives and specialization courses during the second year.

Social Work Practicum
Social Work
Practicum is a part of the academic programme during every semester. During the
first year all the students are expected to work in general setting
(communities, schools, NGOs, and other welfare centers) to acquire competencies
in the use of methods of social work. During the second year, specialisation
specific setting are selected as field
placement agencies.
Eligibility for admission
A candidate who
has passed any three year degree examination of Mangalore University or its
equivalent with 50% and/or 'B' Grade in the Faculty of Arts, Science, Commerce,
Management, Law, Education, Human Resource Development and any other three year
degree courses of any University established by law and recognised as such by
U.G.C is eligible for admission to the M.S.W. Degree programme. However, there
shall be relaxation of 5% (45%) in the caste of SC/ST candidates, and deputed
candidates who have served in an approved govt or registered NGO for a minimum
period of 2 years.
Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.)
The year 1984
was yet another milestone in the progress of the Institute. It started a full-fledged B.S.W.
Degree course which aims at providing prospective candidates of professional
social work, with an opportunity to test their motivation and ability to work
with people. The duration of study for the B.S.W. Degree extends over a period
of three academic years.

Social Work Practicum
The B.S.W.
course prepares students for professional practice in social work. Hence it
includes a practicum or field practice which aims at enabling students to
understand the relevance between theory and practice and to concretise the
theory learned in the classroom. Students are placed in various social welfare
agencies, institutions, schools, communities, where they are given the
experience of working with people, using the matters, skills and techniques
learned.
Eligibility for Admission
A candidate who
has passed the two years pre-university examination conducted by the
Pre-university Board of Education or any other examination or any
equivalent examination considered by the
Mangalore University is eligible for admission to the programme.
